Hanging by a Thread III
Kasavu mundu veshti, thread, wood, 36” x 24” (4 panels)
India Art Fair, Devi Art Foundation
Feb 23

Does textile embody the history that went into its making?

Can the kasavu reconfigure the inherent social codes surrounding its life?

In her persistence to anchor questions of materiality and loss through her practice, Lakshmi revisits the neat classifications of art and craft, masculine and feminine, domestic and public. From what began as a personal journey, Hanging by a Thread evolved into a multifaceted conversation that addresses the material, political, and economic hierarchies surrounding the two-hundred-year-old tradition of kasavu.
